Governor seeks to drum up officials' support for Issue 1

Thursday, September 14, 2000

Gov. Bob Taft was beating the drum for Issue 1 yesterday, urging city officials from across the state to get behind his $400 million bond issue on the Nov. 7 ballot.

"Take this message to all who will listen,'' Taft told about 400 officials attending the Ohio Municipal League fall meeting at the Hyatt Regency.

The governor urged city leaders to pass resolutions, hold press conferences and do whatever possible to get out the word on Issue 1.

If approved, Issue 1 would allow the state to issue $200 million in bonds for environmental cleanups and another $200 million for farmland and greenspace preservation. Taxpayers would foot the $618 million bill, including interest, for paying off the bonds.

The issue would not raise taxes.

"The Clean Ohio Fund will be good for Ohioans for many generations to come,'' Taft said.

Taft was preaching to the choir; the Municipal League, with 800 members, was among the first to endorse Issue 1.
