Taft report on Lake Erie to be released today
September 7, 2000
SANDUSKY - Governor Taft today plans to release a plan
on how state agencies can better coordinate their efforts
to protect and restore Lake Erie.
One new initiative calls for the state to establish model
ordinances that local governments along the lake could adopt
to balance development with preservation of open spaces,
Scott Zody, a state Department of Natural Resources deputy
director, said. Mr. Taft is scheduled to speak at 9:40 a.m.at
the Radisson Harbour Inn, 2001 Cleveland Road.
Tomorrow, Mr. Taft is scheduled to present a mock check
for $2.5 million to Toledo Area Metroparks officials for
acquisition of land for the Fallen Timbers battlefield.
The event starts at 11 a.m. at the Fallen Timbers state
memorial at Side Cut Metropark. The state Controlling Board
in July released $2 million for the project, and the legislature
is expected to provide $500,000.
The Metroparks district has an agreement with Toledo to
buy the 188-acre site of the 1794 battle in Maumee for $5.5
million. In addition to the state, Lucas County has agreed
to spend $300,000 and Maumee city council voted to spend
$500,000 for land acquisition.
