Farm accused of tainting creek with egg wash

Columbus
August 7, 2001
The state filed new contempt-of-court charges against
Buckeye Egg Farm yesterday following a spill of contaminated
water into a creek. The state is seeking $30,000 per day
in fines plus jail time.
Attorney General Betty Montgomery filed the charges in Licking
County Common Pleas Court. It is the seventh time the state
has filed such charges.
Yesterday's contempt charges include accusations that Buckeye
Egg illegally discharged contaminated egg wash Aug. 5 into
a tributary of Raccoon Creek at the company's Croton facility
in Licking County. That spill killed about 30 minnows and
turned the water bright pink.
The charges also accuse Buckeye Egg of improperly applying
the egg wash that led to the spill, and of releasing storm
water at the Croton facility on July 25.
The spill last week involved egg wash sprayed on a dirt
field, Heather Lauer, a spokeswoman with the Ohio Environmental
Protection Agency, said.
Telephone messages seeking comment were left yesterday
for Buckeye Egg officials.
